Smoke Alert: Panel on Oregon's Forest Practices

Monday, January 7, 2019 - 6:00pm to 8:00pm
First Christian Church • 1166 Oak St., Eugene OR

Join Beyond Toxics and other allied groups for a panel presentation on Oregon's forest practices. The state preparing to adopt new rules that allow more “planned” fires in our forests. While sustainably managed prescribed burning can be an excellent land management technique, the panelists will ask whether more fires will cause unnecessary carbon emissions and additional smoke intrusions, and explore how to protect Oregonians from air pollution while maintaining our forests in a sustainable and culturally-appropriate way.

Panelists will present new research from Oregon-based organizations about carbon emissions and forest fires, the consequences of “prescribed fire” in managed forests and the relationship between smoke, carbon pollution, and community health. Panelists include Dominick DellaSala from the Geos Institute, Tim Ingalsbee from Firefighters United for Safety Ethics and Ecology (FUSEE), and Lisa Arkin from Beyond Toxics.
