Voting Rights for the District of Columbia

Friday, November 16, 2018 - 10:30am
The Mims House • 330 High St., Eugene OR

The League of Women Voters of Lane County will host a discussion today about statehood for the District of Columbia. The nearly 700,000 people who reside in the District of Columbia have no voting representation in Congress and cannot govern themselves without interference from the U.S. Congress. In November 2016, DC citizens voted overwhelmingly in favor of petitioning Congress for statehood for the 68-square-mile area - the first step in the process to become a state.

Anne Anderson, chair of the Voting Rights Committee for LWV District of Columbia, will present information about the District’s effort to become the 51st state. The event is free and open to the public; however, seating is limited.

For information about DC’s efforts to become a state, visit the LWV District of Columbia website. For information about the meeting, call 541-343-7917.
