Be A PCP!

Why Be a Precinct Committee Person?
by Carol Horne Dennis

Precinct Committee Persons (or PCPs) are the basic building block of the Party. As elected (or appointed) representatives, PCPs represent their neighbors at the Democratic Party of Lane County's Central Committee meetings where foundational decisions are made that determine the philosophy and values of the local party.

Lane County Democratic PCPs have had significant influence on the State Party. Four years ago, the Democratic Party of Oregon adopted our
Platform
procedure and format. Local PCPs created the nation's first Peace Caucus. The Lane County Chapter of the DPO LGBT Democratic Caucus has one of the largest membership lists in the state. We have outspoken representatives on the DPO Rules and Platform Committees, and a DPLC PCP is Secretary of the DPO.

When former State Senator Vicki Walker was promoted to the State Parole Board and then Chris Edwards moved to the Senate seat, Lane County PCPs conducted two competitive and exciting Nominating Conventions to fulfill our legal responsibility to send a minimum of three candidates to the Lane County Commissioners.

The 2010 DPLC Platform has been called the most progressive platform in memory. We have already seen several of our Legislative Action Items written into legislation getting serious consideration and approval by our Legislators.

Why be a PCP for the DPLC? Well, you can do it because it's fun to see your name on a ballot, or maybe you like the newsletter. Or you can be a PCP who registers Democratic voters in your precinct, joins a local party committee, and voices your opinion at the DPLC Central Committee meetings.

All PCPs are elected or re-elected in the May primary elections of even numbered years. To be elected as a PCP this May, if you haven't filled out the County Elections form, start a little write-in campaign for yourself. All you need is three write-in votes from your precinct and you're in.

Come join the Party!
