Obama meets with Palestinian President

President Obama met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas yesterday and discussed a new aid package of $400 million "to improve access to clean drinking water, create jobs, build schools, and address health, housing and other needs," the Associated Press reports.  The meeting with the Palestine National Authority's leader comes little more than a week after the Israeli military killed nine members of a flotilla loaded with humanitarian supplies headed for the 139 square mile Gaza Strip, which holds 1.6 million people, and has been under blockade for three years now.  Obama also detailed the need for Israel to suspend the building of new settlements in order to renew peace talks with the Palestinian government, as well as the need for Israel to alter the scope of its blockade of Gaza to make sure that necesities like food, medical supplies, and building materials can be allowed into the impoverished territory.
