Join the Eugene City Club for a debate on “Does Single Payer Health Care Belong in Oregon?”

Oregon is again considering a single payer health care bill, and two state senators and three state representatives from Lane County are sponsors of a single payer bill.  Is single payer healthcare worth the trouble? What problems will it solve? What problems will it create? Should we encourage our Lane County legislators to continue to embrace the concept or reject it? Two thoughtful commentators, John Charles of the Cascade Policy Institute and Samuel Metz, MD, of Oregon Physicians for a National Health Program, will discuss the pros and cons of single payer healthcare in Oregon. Each presenter will outline the arguments for his position. Then each will have a few minutes to offer counter arguments.

John A. Charles, Jr., has been the President and CEO of Cascade Policy Institute since 2004. Cascade Policy Institute is a free-market think tank working to promote individual liberty, economic opportunity, and personal responsibility. He earned a BA from the University of Pittsburgh and a Master of Public Administration from Portland State. Samuel Metz is a retired physician, a member of Oregon Physicians for a National Health Program, and a founder of Mad As Hell Doctors, both of which advocate for universal health care. (He is also one of the founders of the Oregon City Club Consortium.) Both Metz and Charles live in Portland.
