Join the Eugene-Springfield NAACP for a free Memorial Day barbecue that includes kids’ activities, an open mic, live performances, and free books and games:
Defending hard won liberty and freedom is the theme of this year's NAACP community gathering. This is an excellent opportunity to honor the sacrifices of all people who love this country - Black, Brown and otherwise."
Gold medalists from the local Act-So program and other local artists will perform on the community stage. This is a great opportunity to get out into the neighborhood and enjoy a meal in the park with family and friends. All community members are welcome.
This will be the 8th annual Memorial Day Barbecue; itwas started by the Lane Community College Black Student Union in 2011. Since 2013 ,the local NAACP has hosted the event, recognizing the link between the fight for liberty and the story of the African American community.
This year's event will also bring attention to the African American connection to Memorial day, which has been traced to burials observed after the Civil War in South Carolina.
