The League of Women Voters of Oregon and the League of Women Voters of Lane County present a public forum on redistricting - the process of redrawing the lines that define political districts - why Oregonians should reform it.. The event is free and open to the public.
The forum will give community members an opportunity to learn and ask questions about Oregon’s redistricting process and how it impacts elections. In Oregon, state legislators traditionally draw district boundary maps every 10 years based on national census data. New district lines based on the 2020 census will be especially important because Oregon is projected to gain a sixth U.S. congressional seat due to population growth.
People Not Politicians, a diverse coalition advocating reform, has launched an initiative campaign to create an independent redistricting commission. At the forum, Candalynn Johnson, LWVOR Campaign Coordinator, will explain how such a commission would function in Oregon and ensure the 2021 redistricting process and future redistricting is fair, impartial and transparent.
