At 1 p.m., protesters will gather at the Federal Courthouse building to express outrage over the recent deaths of unarmed black people at the hands of white police officers. The march follows news of three recent acts of police brutality that led to the tragic deaths of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Breonna Taylor in Kentucky and Ahmaud Arbery in Georgia.
After gathering at the courthouse building and hearing remarks from local NAACP President, Eric Richardson, protesters will make their way across the MLK bridge, and pass by the Eugene police department in nonviolent protest, on the way to Alton Baker Park. All participants are being asked to wear masks (extras will be available) and maintain social distancing protocols throughout the event.
The march will end at Alton Baker Park, where there will be some speeches starting approximately around 2:00 p.m. An ASL interpreter will be present. Speakers will include State Senator James Manning.
