Today’s Eugene City Club program invites newly elected Eugene City Councilors Randy Groves and Matt Keating to describe what they hope to accomplish as new members of the Council.
Keating is replacing Betty Taylor, longest serving City Councilor, who retired after 24 years representing Ward 2. Ward 2 includes the southern tip of the city, starting at Chambers and running east, generally south of 28th Avenue. Groves will occupy the Ward 8 position formerly held by Chris Pryor, who retired after many years of service on the Council. Ward 8 covers the southwest corner of the city, roughly east of Green Hill and south of Royal.
The City Council, Eugene’s legislative body, has eight members and is responsible for passing laws, setting community goals, adopting policy and deciding which services the City will provide. Councilors are elected on a nonpartisan ballot for four-year terms. One councilor is elected from each of eight wards, with one-half of the council elected every two years.
